"'Am I in more danger from you or from whatever is after you?'
Patrick growled. 'What difference does it make, if I can't keep you safe from either?'"

Though it's been vacant for decades and rumored to be haunted, when Helen Mallory finds the house of her dreams, she buys it, restores it and moves in.Nothing inexplicable happens until her first night, when she meets the home's historic resident.
Patrick resided in the house for scores of years, having no trouble chasing off anyone who dared to move in. Obstinately unimpressed with his efforts to scare her, Helen is as determined to stay as he is to make her leave.

How are the horses?” he asked. Did I imagine the menace in his tone?
I tried not to react. “You wouldn’t hurt them.”
“No? Would it get you to leave?”
Was he becoming more aggressive in his campaign to drive me off? Or bluffing?
He said, “People will do things to protect the ones they care about that they won’t do merely to protect themselves. I’ve found your weak spot.”

Helen is intrigued by the man and the mystery that surrounds him. While saying she must leave because he is a danger to her, he is unwilling to harm her. Even learning of two women who were murdered in the woods near the house, and Patrick's claim to be the killer, don't convince her he's dangerous, until Helen feels her horses are being endangered.
“You were trying to scare me away,” I said. “Now that I’m afraid there’s someone out there trying to hurt me or my horses, you’re suddenly concerned for my safety?”
He crossed his arms and glared at me. “Has it occurred to you that the ‘someone’ might be looking to hurt me?”
When Helen confronts Patrick and he denies responsibility, they realize someone else might be threatening Helen, and Patrick may be a target as well. To protect themselves and their home, they have to work together to figure out who their enemy - or enemies - might be.
I was woken by a horrific shriek. I first thought Patrick was slaughtering something close to the house. But the screams were too human to be anything else. And they were Patrick’s.
